ONLY A MOTHER KNOWS

This timeless scene from the Tarangire in Tanzania is one every mother recognizes.  Zebras are actually born with muted brown stripes for early camouflage and gradually darken with maturity.  Because they don’t go by scent when the herd is scattered by a lion attack, the distinctive pattern of stripes is key to each ones identity.  The zebra mare tucks her newborn colt up against her body, shielding it from the rest of the herd until they memorize each other’s unique pattern of stripes.  A precious moment to nurture before the harsh reality of survival makes its entrance on their world.
